Calling photographers and artists within the RN and RM: Announcing The Peter Warwick Memorial Trophy
A special £1000 prize and trophy awaits one lucky winner of The Trafalgar Way's Art & Photography Competition 2020. We're looking for an outstanding photographic or artwork entry from anyone who is currently, or has been, a serving member of the Royal Navy or Royal Marines, including the Fleet Air Arm and Royal Fleet Auxiliary, or who is a member of the Royal Naval or Royal Marine Reserve, Sea Cadets, Marine Cadets, Sea Scouts, or a Royal Naval Association.
The theme of the competition is 'Postcards from The Trafalgar Way'. We are inviting entries from photographers and artists from age 7 upwards to capture scenes of interest anywhere along the 271-mile land route from Falmouth to London. The Trafalgar Way is so named because it recalls the journey by post-chaise taken by the Trafalgar messenger, Lt John Richards Lapenotiere in November 1805. Lapenotiere, who was commander of HM Schooner Pickle, sailed with the dispatches—written by Vice-Admiral Collingwood—from Trafalgar (which is near Gibraltar), then came ashore at Falmouth in Cornwall. His journey overland to reach London, safely delivering the news of victory against Napoleon's combined fleets and of the death of Vice Admiral Lord Nelson, took just 38 hours and required 21 changes of horses. Today the story is commemorated with 39 bronze plaques in towns and villages along the old coaching route, under the custodianship of The 1805 Club, a heritage charity. The Peter Warwick Memorial Trophy commemorates the life and contribution of historian Peter Warwick who was Chairman of The 1805 Club until his death in 2019. In addition to the array of spectacular prizes already on offer to UK residents, and the John Richards Lapenotiere Trophy (worth £500 - the same as the reward received by Lt Lapenotiere himself in 1805) which is reserved for residents of the eight counties* of the Trafalgar Way, 'Postcards from the Trafalgar Way' offers prizes in both photography and art categories. Art can be any form of two-dimensional artwork, including digital art. Entries are welcomed from professional artists and photographers as well as amateurs. The closing date for entries is 1st September 2020. Royal Naval Photographic Branch
We are delighted to announce that Rob Harding of the Royal Naval Photographic Branch (phots) has agreed to be one of the judges for the final round of the competition. The Royal Navy’s photographic specialisation predominantly provides images and video to tell the story to the British public of how Royal Navy and Royal Marines are protecting our Nations’ interests around the clock. Photography skills also form a vital part of naval ops.
